FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT AGE IS ARTSTERS FOR?
We offer a range of Artsters sessions designed to support children at different stages of their creative journey. Artsters Play sessions are suitable for babies from 9 months who are able to sit comfortably, through to children aged 5. Our Artsters Create workshops are aimed at children aged 6–11 and offer a deeper exploration of materials and techniques, helping to develop creative skills and confidence.
At the beginning of a child’s Artsters journey, sessions focus on sensory exploration, with plenty of opportunities to experience different textures, colours and mark-making tools. As children grow, their creativity becomes more purposeful: they begin to make more intentional marks and use resources in increasingly imaginative and innovative ways.
WHERE DOES ARTSTERS TAKE PLACE?
We have our very own beautiful, warm studio space in Unit L at the Linwood Centre, Linwood Lane, LE2 6QJ in the south of Leicester city centre, with ample parking just outside. Our weekly term-time sessions and weekend specials are all held here. We also have our trusty Artsters van (give us a wave if you see us out and about) which we use to take our signature Artsters provision to events in the community. We are always looking for new ways to bring the painty fun to more people, so if you'd like to see us at your event feel free to get in touch!
WHAT HAPPENS AT AN ARTSTERS PLAY SESSION?
Our sessions start with a whole-group singalong to warm up together, followed by our Mini Masterpieces. These are individual works of art inspired by a different artist each week. We then bring out a variety of free-flow activities, including easels, tuff trays and our popular paper roll. We signal the end of the session by playing the Rainbow Song, and bring out two tubs of warm water with hypoallergenic soap to get cleaned up with.
WHAT HAPPENS AT AN ARTSTERS CREATE SESSION?
These one-off workshops are aimed at children aged 6-11 with an interest in art. They are child-centred drop-off sessions led an experienced educator who has been DBS-checked, and we ask that your child feels comfortable attending the session independently. Each workshop focusses on a particular art technique or theme, with time for children to explore our creative resources independently and individual artwork to take home.
WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?
Paint can be messy, and you might find that your child prefers to use their fingers, toes, and even their mouth to explore it! It's our aim to give your child the opportunity to play with art however they wish, but it does mean that paint can make its way onto clothes, so old clothes for everyone are a must. You can also add an Artsters T-shirt to your order on our website, or purchase one in person. Please bring an old towel, wipes and anything else you need to get clean.
CAN I BOOK A TRIAL/ONE-OFF SESSION?
We usually ask that Artsters Play bookings are made in half-termly blocks. This is because, for the safety and enjoyment of everyone, places are limited and we need to know how many children are attending the session each week to be able to plan and offer high quality activities – and to make sure we have a Mini Masterpiece for each of our attendees. Our experience also shows that children benefit much more from attending the classes on a weekly basis – it’s through attending regularly that they develop confidence, skills and friendships. If we have any spaces remaining these are then offered as 'drop-in' bookings on a first come first served basis.
WHAT IF MY CHILD DOESN'T WANT TO TAKE PART IN ALL THE ACTIVITIES?
Our sessions are child-led, and your child is welcome to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. We aim to create a warm and welcoming environment where we can get to know one another and find resources that they might enjoy engaging with.
WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
We aim to use natural materials wherever possible to give children an appreciation of the world around them. Our activities will include a range of resources, from paint to 3D shapes, playdough to collage, allowing your child to find the materials that interest them. We ask that you inform us of any allergies when booking on to our sessions so that we can provide a safe environment and adapt our activities as necessary.
